Michael J. Moore grew up in Stoughton, Massachusetts, in a large Irish American family. Like many young men
of his age, Moore was drafted into the Vietnam War. After the war, Moore became a commercial fisherman,
working out of New Bedford. Between trips he lived on a farm in Stowe, Vermont. He awoke one morning to
find art students painting in the fields outside of the house. He watched as their teacher critiqued their work.
Inspired, Moore enrolled in the course the following summer.

Moore followed his teacher back to New York City and worked his way through eight years of classical training at
the Art Student's League, immersing himself in the techniques of the Dutch and Italian Masters. He then lived in
Nantucket for ten years, refining his craft and gaining national recognition. In 2000 he moved to South Strafford,
Vermont with his wife Caroline and sons, Thomas and Will.
Influenced by his rural New England heritage and years at sea, Moore is also guided by the history and tradition upon which his training is founded.
Making his own paints and preparing his canvasses using methods practiced centuries ago, Moore has distinguished himself as a classical artist.
Moore paints and displays his work at his Vermont studio, a barn on his property in South Strafford. Seasonally, he also displays his work at
East End Gallery and at the Stephen Swift Gallery in Nantucket, MA.
